PNG vs SVG: Which File Do You Need for Cricut, Sublimation and DTF?

Updated 2026-10-14 · 6 min read

PNG and SVG files can look identical on screen, but they behave very differently on a cutting machine or a printer. Picking the right one saves time and wasted blanks.

The short answer

  • Printing (sublimation, DTF, print-and-cut, mugs, stickers): PNG is usually all you need.
  • Cutting vinyl or HTV with a Cricut or Silhouette: SVG is best, because the machine cuts along vector paths.
  • Screen printing or embroidery: start from SVG (vector) when possible, then separate colours or digitise.

What is a PNG?

A PNG is a raster image made of pixels. It supports a transparent background, so the design can sit on any colour without a white box around it. Because it is made of pixels, it has a fixed resolution: enlarging it far beyond its size makes it blurry.

For print projects, look for a large PNG (around 3000 pixels or more on the long side) so it prints sharply at shirt size.

What is an SVG?

An SVG is a vector file made of shapes and paths described mathematically. It can be scaled to any size without losing quality, and cutting machines use those paths as cut lines.

Detailed, painterly or watercolour artwork does not convert well to SVG, which is why many illustrated designs are sold as PNG only, while lettering and simple graphics often come in both formats.

Using each format in Cricut Design Space

  1. Upload an SVG and it arrives as separate layers ready to cut — check that layers are welded or attached as needed.
  2. Upload a PNG and choose Print Then Cut for full-colour stickers or printable HTV; the machine cuts around the outline.
  3. For a single-colour vinyl cut from a PNG, Design Space can trace it, but results depend on how clean the image is — an SVG is more reliable.

How to choose before you buy

Every HEEEXY product page lists exactly which files are included (PNG, or PNG and SVG) and shows previews on white, dark and transparent backgrounds so you can check edges before buying.

FAQ

Can I convert a PNG to SVG?

You can trace simple, high-contrast PNGs into vectors, but detailed or shaded art rarely converts cleanly. Buy the SVG version when you need to cut.

Which is better for DTF printing?

A high-resolution PNG with a transparent background is the usual choice for DTF and sublimation.

Do SVG files work for sublimation?

Yes, you can print an SVG, but most sublimation workflows use PNG because it keeps colours and transparency exactly as designed.
